Membership Grades of CIOB

There are two Chartered grades that CIOB provides. The first one is Fellow, and the second one is Member. However, there is also a Non-Chartered Student grade for current students. Read the whole article to know about these grades.

Member (MCIOB):

The Chartered Membership grade (MCIOB) comes with countless benefits, and the most noticeable one of these benefits is the right to use the post-nominal letters MCIOB. There are also two choices before you between the descriptor of Chartered Construction Manager and Chartered Builder. As a Chartered Member, you will be able to vote and apply to become a Trustee, which will enable you to actively take part in the CIOB management.

You will also enjoy benefits like access to more than 500 events every year, free CPD resources from the CIOB Academy, access to its Library Information Service and a complimentary subscription to Construction Manager Magazine. A Chartered Member can also use the CIOB logo and many services and products.

Fellow (FCIOB):

The grade of Fellowship is the highest award that the organization awards. Its Fellows are amongst the most knowledgeable and experienced professionals in the construction industry, recognized worldwide for their attainments and skills throughout their careers.

Besides that, the post-nominal letters, FCIOB, is highly valued and sought after. Entry to Fellowship is focused on satisfying a unique set of leadership competencies and behaviours at a strategic level, reflecting the highest standard of professional competence.

This grade is benchmarked at Level 7 by ENIC and equivalent to a Master’s degree level, Fellowship applications are for senior professionals having more than five years of experience in leading an organization, leading people and paying a contribution to the industry, communities and/or society.

Aside from getting the benefits of Chartered Membership, attaining the Fellow grade can bring considerable additional rewards that include career progression, employer achievement recognition, promotion, higher salaries and a broader range of job opportunities.

When you retire, apply for the Retired Grade. If your application is accepted, you can use new designations: Ret MCIOB for Members and Ret FCIOB for Fellows.

Applicant:

A non-chartered credential of Applicant is an entry for those who don’t have existing ACIOB/ICIOB membership and want to attain a chartership. You need to satisfy eligibility requirements and be admitted to this grade to take your next steps towards becoming Chartered. The grade of Applicant doesn’t offer any entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations. However, by making progress through the most appropriate pathway to membership, you can attain your Chartered Membership and enjoy all the benefits coming with being MCIOB.

Student:

Student membership is an entry point to membership. It is for those who are studying with the CIOB or in education. This credential doesn’t offer any entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations. However, by making progress through the most appropriate pathway to membership, you can gain your Chartered Membership and enjoy all the benefits that are with being MCIOB.

This membership gives you instant access to many resources that will help your transition to a valuable career.

What is Professional Review?

The last stage for Chartered Membership for most candidates is the CIOB Professional Review. It assesses you to ensure that you have the right knowledge, skills and experience in the three main areas of competence: management, professionalism and occupational. If attaining a positive assessment, you will become a Chartered Member and be entitled to use the MCIOB designation.
