PEO Provisional Licence

 A PEO provisional licence may be granted to an applicant if applying for a professional engineer (P.Eng) licence.

The condition is that the applicant has to satisfy all of PEO’s licensing requirements aside from the minimum of 12 months of acceptable and verifiable engineering experience in a Canadian jurisdiction, under the supervision of a professional engineer who is licensed in the jurisdiction in which the work was taken up.

To fulfill the eligibility criteria for a provisional licence, a P.Eng. licence applicant must have:

·        Fulfilled PEO’s academic requirements for licensing;

·        Passed PEO’s National Professional Practice Examination; and

·        Demonstrated to PEO’s satisfaction a minimum of 36 months of verifiable and acceptable engineering experience outside of Canada.

Conditions for a provision licence:

As per section 44.1(2) of Regulation 941/1990: The below-listed conditions apply to every provisional licence:

The provisional licence has validity for 12 months from the date of issuance. It may be renewed once for at most 12 months if the Registrar thinks that renewal is required to enable the applicant to attain the experience needed by paragraph 4 of subsection 33 (1).

The provisional licence holder can practice professional engineering only under the supervision of a professional engineer, and shall issue a final drawing, plan, specification, report or other documents unless the supervising professional engineer signs and dates it and affixes their seal to it.

A provisional licence authorizes the holder to practice professional engineering in Ontario only under the supervision of a professional engineer who is licenced in the Ontario province.

How to attain a provisional licence?

If you fulfill the eligibility requirements for a provisional licence and wish to attain one, you need to request one by writing to PEO. Your written request must include your complete name, your PEO file number and your signature.

You are responsible to ensure that PEO has your current experience record on file and your referee response forms. If PEO doesn’t have a current and complete detailed engineering experience record, provide one with your request for a provisional licence.  PEO may need applicants to attend an Experience Requirements Committee interview before giving a provisional licence.

When your application is approved for a provisional licence, you will be invoiced for the professional licence registration fee of $339 ($300.00 + HST).

Professional Engineers Ontario may grant a provisional licence to those applicants who have completed all the requirements for licensing as a professional engineer apart from the 12 months of acceptable engineering experience in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. This licence is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance and may be renewed for an additional 12 months only under special circumstances as determined by the Registrar.

The provisional licence holder can practice professional engineering only under the supervision of a professional engineer and shall not issue a final drawing, specification, plan, report or other documents unless the supervising professional engineer signs and dates it and affixes their seal to it.
